Residents in Luwero town council are at risk of disease outbreaks over uncollected heaps of uncollected garbage.

Julius Kamunvi, the Deputy LCIII Chairman of Luwero Town Council said that the Central Government donated a tractor and truck to help the town council to collect garbage but one vehicle was grounded four years ago after it broke down.

Kamuvi added that the truck that is still in use is also in bad mechanical condition making it difficult to collect the garbage daily leaving residents crying foul.

To make matters worse, Kamunvi said that the dumping site is full and the town struggling to find another alternative site.

There are markets in Luwero town including Luwero Central Market, Kasana, Balikyewunya, Kiyenje, Binyonyi farmers and Kasana pineapple market.

These generate the largest volumes of garbage and others are from households all collected by a single truck.

Harunah Ssekitoleko the owner of Harunah Classic Butcher located in Luwero Central Market said several times the town council can take up to two weeks without collecting the garbage due to the breakdown of the single truck.

On Monday, Joint Security personnel comprising of soldiers of Uganda People’s Defense Forces, Uganda Prison Service and Policemen conducted a general cleaning exercise in Luwero town as one of the activities to mark 44th Terehe Sita which will take place on 6th February at Kasasa township in Kyotera district.Brigadier General Charles Byanyima the Commandant of the UPDF Motorized Infantry said there was much work to be done by local leaders and residents to ensure that the town is clean for the safety of their health.
