Initially slated for completion in February 2024, the bridge’s construction—undertaken by Strakon Uganda Limited—faced delays, pushing the new handover date to February 13, 2025.

The highly anticipated handover of the UGX 1.2 billion Lanyadyang Bridge along the Lamola-Gwengco Road has been postponed following the suspension of the USAID grant that funded the project. Initially slated for completion in February 2024, the bridge’s construction—undertaken by Strakon Uganda Limited—faced delays, pushing the new handover date to February 13, 2025.

However, the recent suspension of the USAID grant by U.S. President Donald Trump has halted the process. Kitgum District Chairperson Christopher Obol Arwai announced the development during a council meeting at Kitgum District Council Hall. He stated that the district is engaging the Ministry of Local Government to facilitate the handover.

“We were ready to hand over the bridge to the district, but the suspension of the USAID grant has thrown everything into disarray,” Arwai said. “We are now working closely with the Ministry of Local Government to find a way forward.” The Lanyadyang Bridge, funded under the Northern Uganda Development Initiative (NUDEIL), is a key infrastructure project connecting Kitgum and Pader districts, improving access to markets, social services, and economic activities.

Despite the setback, Arwai expressed optimism that an alternative solution would be found to ensure the bridge’s handover. The delay has caused frustration among councilors, who had hoped for its completion. Labongo Amida West Sub-County Female Councilor Sarah Aber emphasized the bridge’s importance in improving access to essential services.

Arwai urged councilors and residents to remain patient as the district awaits further communication from the Ministry of Local Government.
