Chaos has erupted in the elections of the National Resistance Movement party structures for village and LCI Chairman flagbearers in Wobulenzi town council.
At around 10 am, hundreds of NRM supporters turned up at Wobulenzi town taxi park in Luwero district to participate in the elections for the Modern zone.
Three candidates that include Morgan Buyinza, Sam Kibuuka and Flavia Namatovu expressed interest to contest NRM village Chairperson seat for Modern zone .
The Returning officer for Modern zone Andrew Gudo embarked on roll call of voters in yellow book only to find Kibuuka’s name missing and disqualified him from the race.Kibuuka later mobilised his voters to vote for Namatovu.
At around 11am, the elections begun and Namatovu won the race after scoring 255 votes defeating Buyinza who got 160 votes.
However before the returning officer declared the winner , Buyinza beat up Yasin Ssegawa the campaigner of Namatovu accusing him of demobilising him and blocking other people to vote . Ssegawa insisted that some of the people blocked were not registered NRM voters.
The elections degenerated into chaos after the supporters of Buyinza attempted to also beat up the returning officer and supporters of Namatovu before policemen deployed to quell the fight.
Gudo later fled to Wobulenzi Police for safety after supporters of Buyinza attempted to beat him, paralysing the elections in other seats.
Anne Nabukenya the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Luwero District said that Policemen also arrest Buyinza but later released him to ease tension.
Nabukenya said that both camps deployed vigilantes to guard the elections and campaign, which contributed to the violence.
David Kamugisha, the Luwero NRM District Registrar, said that the District Police Commander, Brighton Ahimbisamukamu, later rushed to the polling station and restored order before elections resumed at other posts.
Kamugisha said in other areas that including Kikyusa town council, several people who were not in the yellow book attempted to participate in elections, but they were stopped.
Kamugisha said as per party Electoral Commission guidelines, only those in the register are supposed to vote to avoid malpractices.
