Mukono town is currently facing a troubling wave of violent attacks targeting Boda boda riders, with over five incidents reported in less than a week. The most recent victim, Jamadah Kiggundu, a resident of Wakoba in Nakisunga Sub-county, was ambushed in Namiryango, Goma Division.

He was stabbed and left unconscious by the roadside. Eyewitnesses reported that Kiggundu was attacked while heading to work early in the morning, and his motorcycle, which he had acquired through a loan, was stolen. Speaking from Mukono General Hospital, Kiggundu’s father, Abdullah Bogere, voiced his concern about his son’s condition.

“He has been in this business for years, and now he is fighting for his life with severe head injuries,” he lamented. Umar Ssebuyungo, Operations Officer of the Uganda People’s Defense Reserve Force for Greater Mukono, described Kiggundu’s status upon his arrival at the hospital.

“He was heavily bleeding and unconscious. Riders need to exercise caution and avoid dangerous areas,” he warned. Ssebuyungo urged bodaboda riders to inform their families or colleagues of their whereabouts, especially when contacted by unknown individuals.

Anatoli Wamala, Secretary of the Mukono Central Division Bodaboda Association, called on local leaders to improve safety measures. “We need to educate our riders, install cameras in high-risk areas, and collaborate closely with security agencies to protect ourselves,” Wamala emphasized.

Residents, including other Boda boda riders, are demanding greater vigilance within the community. Johnbosco Wamala, a rider from Goma Division, advised his colleagues to prioritize their safety and work together with local authorities to reduce the risk of attacks.

Mukono Police Commander Bernard Mugerwa highlighted ongoing efforts to raise awareness among bodaboda riders about avoiding dangerous routes. However, he acknowledged that some riders do not heed the warnings.

Kiggundu remains under treatment at Mukono General Hospital, while police intensify their investigations to apprehend the culprits. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of bodaboda operators throughout the region.
