Mityana Police Detain Suspect in Deadly Machete Attack

Police in Mityana are holding a man in connection with a machete attack that left one person dead and another injured in Kasambya Village, Bujayo Parish, Kalangalo Sub-County, Mityana District.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala identified the suspect as Agongu James, a resident of Kasambya Village. The deceased was Sylvester Lubayiza, 45, also a resident of the same village.

According to Kawala, Agongu, who reportedly suffers from mental illness, began knocking on people’s doors while armed with a machete. When Lubayiza stepped outside to investigate, Agongu allegedly attacked him, inflicting fatal cuts on his face, mouth, head, and neck.

After killing Lubayiza, Agongu proceeded to the home of Steven Byatakatonda, 48, and attacked him as well. However, Byatakatonda was rushed to the hospital and is now out of danger.

Kawala stated that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect experiences occasional mental health episodes, during which he removes his clothes and walks naked. The body of the deceased was examined and later handed over to relatives for burial.
