72-Year-Old Woman Kills Son in Land Dispute

Police in Kikuube District have arrested Tereza Mukanyarwaya, a 72-year-old resident of Kimbugu village, for the murder of her son, Benon Havugimana, 40. The incident occurred after Havugimana, armed with a hoe, allegedly stormed his mother’s home and threatened to kill her over a land dispute.

Havugimana, who had accused his mother of refusing to allow him to sell part of the family land, was reportedly hacked to death by Mukanyarwaya in self-defense. Witnesses, including Peter Alinaitwe, the Kimbugu village defense secretary, noted that Havugimana had a history of threatening his mother, despite having already sold his share of the family land.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region Police Spokesperson, revealed that Havugimana had recently been released from prison after serving time for threatening violence against his mother.
